Glossary

Short definitions of the words you'll meet on Grainlify, in alphabetical order. Each one links to the page that explains it in full.

A to D

Abandon. An assignment released because you went quiet: no qualifying pull request before the deadline. Abandons can lower your chances in later draws. See Your assignment.

Appeal. A request to review a GrainHack verdict you think is wrong. You make it from My GrainHack → My results while the event's results are published. See Results, grading and appeals.

Application. Your request to work on an issue. Grainlify posts it as a comment on the GitHub issue, so the maintainer sees it where they already work. See Apply for an issue.

Assignment. Being given an issue to work on. On an ordinary issue the maintainer assigns you. On a bounty or a GrainHack issue, the draw does. See After you apply.

Bounty. A fixed amount posted on a GitHub issue through the Grainlify bounty agent, paid in USDC on Solana after a maintainer merges your pull request and a person approves the payout. See How Grainlify Bounties work.

Claim. Collecting a payout on Aptos with the wallet at your registered payout address. Each payout has a claim window, and Grainlify reminds you before it closes. Claiming is built but not switched on yet, so nothing has been claimed. See How payouts work.

Draw. How bounties and GrainHack issues are assigned. Applications stay open for a set window, then one applicant is picked at random, weighted by their tickets. See Apply for a bounty for the bounty draw and The draw: tickets and weights for GrainHack's.

E to L

Ecosystem. A group of related projects, shown together on the Ecosystems page. Maintainers choose their project's ecosystem. See Ecosystems.

Event phases. The stages a GrainHack event moves through: Applications open, Issue prep, Live, Closed, Results published and Settled. See What GrainHack is.

Founding Contributor Pool. A fixed amount of USDC, announced up front, shared among early contributors who qualify, in proportion to their shares. It replaced the retired points programme. See Founding Contributor Pool.

GitHub App. The Grainlify GitHub App. Maintainers install it on the repositories they choose, which lists those repositories on Grainlify and keeps them in sync. See Add your repositories.

GrainHack. Grainlify's time-boxed events. Each has a sponsor-funded pool, its issues are assigned by draw, and accepted work is paid from the pool. See What GrainHack is.

Ledger. The public record of Grainlify Bounties money: GRAIN creator fees in once they're tracked, every inference call bought, and every bounty paid, each linked to its transaction or receipt. See The bounty ledger.

M to R

Maintainer. Someone who owns a project on Grainlify, by adding it with the GitHub App. Maintainers review applications and assign issues on their own projects. See Contributor, maintainer and admin views.

Payout address. An address you register in Settings → Payout Preferences by signing a message: a Base address, from an Ethereum wallet, for GrainHack, and an Aptos address, from Petra, for the Founding Contributor Pool. A payout is locked to the address registered when it was prepared or published. See Register your payout address.

Rank. Your place on the leaderboard for the current season, from pull requests merged on projects listed on Grainlify. It places you in a tier. It is a public record, not money. See Ranks and the leaderboard.

Referral. Someone who joins through your referral link. It completes once they sign in with GitHub and verify their identity. See Referrals.

S to Z

Season. The leaderboard's default period, This season: pull requests merged in the last 90 days, counted back from today. The leaderboard can also show All time. See Ranks and the leaderboard.

Share. Your portion of the Founding Contributor Pool. Nobody knows what a share is worth until the pool is shared out, because it depends on how many shares everyone earned. See Founding Contributor Pool.

Slot. In GrainHack, each open assignment uses one slot, and you have a limited number. Applying doesn't use a slot; only winning a draw does. See Who can take part.

Social follow. Following Grainlify on LinkedIn and X, proved with a screenshot of each. It earns nothing by itself, but the Founding Contributor Pool requires it. See Social follow.

Ticket. Your entry in a draw. Your weights multiply together into your tickets, and your chance of winning is your tickets divided by everyone's. See The draw: tickets and weights.

Verdict. The grade a GrainHack pull request receives: Not accepted, Accepted, Substantial or Exceptional. It decides your share of the event's pool. See Results, grading and appeals.

Wave. Your group in the Founding Contributor Pool, given in the order people qualify: Founding member, Early member or Open wave. Earlier waves get a larger multiplier on their shares. See Founding Contributor Pool.

Weight. One factor the draw multiplies your tickets by, such as how well you fit the issue or never having won before. The live weights are published on the bounty rules page and in My GrainHack → Rules. See The draw: tickets and weights.
