Verify your identity
Some payouts need your identity to be verified first. Grainlify uses an outside provider, Didit, to check an identity document and a selfie. You start it from Settings, it takes a few minutes in a separate window, and you normally do it once.
When you need it
You don't need to verify to browse, apply for issues, take part in GrainHack or win a bounty. You need it for:
| For | When it's checked |
|---|---|
| A GrainHack payout | When the event's payout is prepared. If you aren't verified then, your share is not sent. |
| The Founding Contributor Pool | Your place in the pool is given when you're verified and your social follow is approved, and you must still be verified when a payout is published. |
| A referral | A referral counts only once the person you referred has verified. |
Bounties don't need it. A bounty is paid to the Solana wallet linked to your GitHub account; see Link your Solana wallet.
Whether you're verified is read at the moment a payout is prepared, not when you finish the work. Verify before an event ends rather than waiting for the payout.
Before you start
- A valid passport, national ID card or driving licence. Use the original document, not a photocopy or a photo of a screen.
- A camera for the selfie. A phone works.
- A browser that allows the verification window to open. If your browser blocks pop-ups, allow them for grainlify.com.
Start verification
- Open Billing Profiles. Open the menu under your picture, top right, choose Settings, then the Billing Profiles tab. The Verify KYC button on Discover takes you to the same place.
- Create a profile, if you have none. Choose New Profile, give it a Profile Name, leave Profile Type as Individual, and choose Create. The other types are marked Soon.
- Open the profile. Its General Information shows your name, address and other details as Will be filled after KYC.
- Choose Verify KYC. Didit opens in a new window. The page says A new window will open for verification. Please complete the process there.
- Follow Didit's steps. Photograph your document and take a selfie, in that window. When you finish, go back to the Grainlify tab. It checks your status every few seconds for up to five minutes.
If you already started a session that hasn't finished, Grainlify says You already have a verification session open. Continue where you left off. Choose Continue verification to return to it.
The billing profile is kept in your browser, not on your account. On another browser or device you'll see no profile until you create one; once you're verified, a new profile shows as verified straight away, because the verification itself belongs to your account.
What each status means
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Missing Verification and Verify KYC | You haven't started. | Start verification. |
| Verify KYC, no badge | A session was started and not finished, or it expired. | Choose Verify KYC again. |
| In Review | Didit wants a person to look at your case. The button is hidden while it's reviewed. | Nothing. You'll get a notification when it's decided. If it's been more than a few days, get help. |
| Verification Rejected and Try verification again | The check wasn't approved. | Read the advice under the badge and try again. You can start a new check straight away. |
| This profile has been verified. | You're verified. Your name and address are filled in from your document. | Nothing. |
You get a notification when your verification is approved, not approved, sent for review, or when a session expires.
If it isn't approved
Most refusals come down to the photo of the document. Before you try again:
- Use the original physical document, in bright, even light, with all four corners in the frame.
- For the selfie, face the camera directly and take off a hat, sunglasses or a mask.
- Check the document is valid and not expired.
A Grainlify admin may also reopen your verification with a note about what to fix. You'll get a notification titled You can verify your identity again, with the reason; start a new verification from Billing Profiles. If a second attempt isn't approved either, get help and choose the Verification category, which is handled privately. Don't include ID numbers or photos of documents in a help request.
Once you're verified
You don't verify again for each payout. Didit can withdraw its approval after a later review; if that happens, you're notified, your status changes, and you'd need to verify again before your next GrainHack or pool payout.
What is stored
Didit holds your document and selfie. Grainlify stores your verification status and Didit's decision, including the details read from your document: your name, address, date of birth, the document type and number, and the result of the selfie match.
- Other people see only whether you're verified: a shield on your public profile.
- You see your status and the details read from your document on your billing profile.
- Grainlify admins see your status and the Didit case reference, and read the case itself in Didit. Alerts about verifications waiting for review reach them through Telegram, with your GitHub username, status and Didit's warning codes, but not your details.
Grainlify keeps Didit's decision as Didit returns it, so it can hold more than the details above, such as links to the images Didit captured. It also appears in Grainlify's application logs. It's kept for as long as your account exists; there's no automatic deletion. The Terms and Conditions tab in Settings sets out exactly what is stored.
